Health Care Action Summit Summary

President Dian Palmer Talks about Crisis in Health Care

Members Listen to Presentation on the Growing Health Care Crisis

On February 9th and 10th in Milwaukee and Madison, SEIU District 1199 Wisconsin members met to discuss a plan of action for addressing America's growing health care crisis. We all agreed that as health care professionals we have a special ability to serve as spokespeople for reform that would control the hyperinflation of health insurance costs, improve access to health care and create safer staffing in health care facilities.

Health Care in Crisis

Members who attended the first Health Care Action Summit in October 2003 recapped discussions and presentations on the growing crisis in access to health care. Unsafe staffing in health care facilities and the soaring costs of health insurance are closely related problems requiring a common solution. See the SEIU Wisconsin State Council slide presentation on the current health care crisis and how we got here.

A Plan for Reform in Wisconsin

A plan to control the costs of health care and dramatically increase acess to health insurance for everyone is gaining support in Wisconsin and will soon be introduced as legislation. According to independent analysts, the plan would reduce the cost of a family health insurance plan to $300 per month. Members discussed how we can support the plan and serve as spokespeople for action on the health care crisis. See a summary of the Wisconsin Health Care Plan.
