How We Got Here
Round 2: The House of Cards Begins to Topple
Double Digit Health Care Inflation: Market mechanisms do not control costs for long. As health systems consolidate and pharmaceutical corporations market more directly and agressively, costs begin to rise rapidly again.
Major spike in number of Uninsured and Underinsured: With astronomical increases in the costs of health insurance, employers either eliminate health coverage for their employees or move to scaled down plans with much higher co-pays and deductibles. Consequently, millions of people lose access to insurance.
Attacks on Public Employee Health Care: The cost of health insurance begins to put significant pressure on already stressed government budgets. Opponents of public services stir up resentment of public employee benefits among consumers who lack access to affordable health insurance.
